The fuel control unit is the heart of the Avon, it not only provides fuel from the pilots demands but also trims the fuel flow dependant on altitude, temperature and speed.

Tony Hulls hauling in the Avon. The Rolls Royce Avon for this mark of Lightning is the 300 series, 30201. This Avon has one more stage of compressors than those that powered the early Lightnings.

The angle of the engine is obvious in this shot. This is necessary as the starter has to be inserted into the bay before the rear of the engine can be lowered with the aid of the lifting beam.
